Old-Fashioned School: This Old House

Using our slates
It is very convenient when your child comes up with an idea that you already were planning to do. And so when Ella said, "Mom, we have an Old Village store, we should do Old Village school," I said, "That's a great idea!" So we pulled out some slates and are learning our ABCs the old-fashioned way.

Our first project was to make an old-fashioned house. We drew a house on a big piece of paper, and pulled out our Lehman's Non-Electric Catalog. Get your own copy of the catalog here. Our house had a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and a storage room. The storage room being where everything that didn't already have a place went. Of course, we don't have any rooms like that in our house...

Ella had to draw in the people and some furniture we couldn't find like beds and tables. The kitchen was definitely the most fun to outfit with wood cookstoves and butter churns.
